On 12th October 2025 the new EU digital border system called the Entry Exit System (EES) came into force.
British travellers, alongside all other non-EU nationals will be registered into the EES when crossing Schengen borders.
British nationals visiting Italy for a short stay (where they are not resident in the EU) must register in the EES at the border i.e. either at an airport or port. Non-EU nationals will be directed to a kiosk or border official to provide their biometrics and have their passports scanned.
The system will replace passport stamping and will automatically calculate how many days non-EU travellers (without a visa) have spent in the Schengen area. The current rule is that they should not stay longer than 90 days in any 180-day period.
It is not necessary to register in the EES if a person is a British national resident in Italy holding either a Carta di Soggiorno Brexit (as a Withdrawal Agreement beneficiary) or a Permesso di Soggiorno (if resident in Italy since 1 January 2021).
We advise non-EU residents in Italy to carry their documentation when travelling, or to apply for a Carta di Soggiorno Brexit, if eligible and not already in possession of this.
