Registering minors as Italian citizens – deadline extended

Beneficio di Legge 74/2025: Deadline to Register Italian citizenship of minors’ deadline is extended to 31 May 2029.

The Italian Chamber of Deputies has approved, at committee level, a measure extending the deadline for parents to declare their intention to apply for Italian citizenship on behalf of minor children. This procedure is reserved exclusively for children who have at least one parent who is an Italian citizen on the grounds of ius sanguinis but who cannot automatically transmit their Italian citizenship to the minor child.

The new text postpones the current deadline from 31 May 2026 to 31 May 2029, amending provisions introduced under Law 74/2025. The measure forms part of the annual Milleproroghe decree and will now proceed to a final vote.

If approved (which is widely expected), the decree will move to the Senate for final confirmation. The Milleproroghe must be converted into law by 1 March to remain in force.

The extension is particularly relevant for Italian families residing abroad. Many parents have reported significant difficulties in securing appointments at Italian consulates within the original timeframe.

Additional delays have been caused by slow issuance of certificates by Italian municipalities, difficulties updating AIRE records or incomplete documentation preventing timely submission.

Without a confirmed consular appointment and complete documentation, applications cannot be formalized within the legal deadline.

While the extension offers additional time, parents are strongly advised not to delay preparations. Consular backlogs and administrative delays remain significant and early action is recommended to secure appointments and obtain required documentation.

We will continue monitoring the final parliamentary vote and Senate confirmation.
